Visiting the New Hope for Cambodian Children (NHCC)

My exploration about HIV and at the end of the exploration we will have an educational workshop about HIV to Cambodians. Today on the 2nd of March 2018, we went to New Hope for Cambodia Children(NHCC). NHCC is an organization that helps kids who have HIV/Aids and also is a school for them to learn. We visit them to understand more about HIV and also try to work with them in order to raise the awareness of HIV in Cambodia. Before I went there I have this idea in mind. The students there all have HIV so if I go there and play with I will have HIV too? What I learn about HIV and the real world was so different. After getting to know the students there I feel ashamed or think that they are the difference between us. Actually, they go to school and can do anything that we do every but the only thing is that they take medicine in order for them to live there normal life. Today I have learned very important things in life before you assume something you have to try it and no matter what you is you.

Hedy Lamarr – Women in STEM

On the 18th of January, we had a project to write an article about any Women in the STEM field. My article includes information about Hedy Lamarr and also her inventions that she had created.

Hedy Lamarr was born on the 9th november 1913 in Vienna, Austria, the daughter of a wealthy jewish banker. She drop out of school just because she want to pursue her dream, which is to become an actress. In her film career, she had become a Hollywood star in 1940s and she was essentially the equivalent of Angelina Jolie. Hedy Lamarr was once known as the most beautiful woman in the world.

There is no record of Hedy Lamarr talking about her invention to the reporters. Her invention is call “Frequency hopping” and she work on this inventintion with George Antheil. In her off hours, from work she work on this creation. There’s a lot of rumors about her invention. Some says “She is too beautiful, to come up with this brilliant idea.” What I learn from her is that you don’t have to have a high school degree to invent something. What you need is your brain and dot connection. The more you connect ideas from various people the more you can improve your invention. Hedy Lamarr created her device in world war II to assist secret communication, and it also served as an essential building block for wifi, bluetooth and GPS. That we now use these type of thing everyday and we don’t even realize who was the inspiration for these people to create Wifi, bluetooth and GPS. Hedy Lamarr has no science training but have a exceptional scientific mind. She always took things into her own hands and never let anyone control her. She talked to the navy about her invention with George Antheil and provided 7 millions dollars to the USA for the selling war bond. The Navy didn’t us her invention at that time but they it after world war II.

When she grew old, she finally received recognition but she can’t get out of her house. However, she was still able to send voice message to everyone by the news saying thanks you. Hedy Lamarr and George Antheil applied for the patent for her invention on 11th August 1941 under her marriage name “Hedy Kiesler Markey” with a co-founder George Antheil. Then she was honored by Electronic Frontier Foundation in 1997 for her invention. During her life she was quoted as saying “Any girl can be glamorous. All you have to do is stand still and look stupid.” While she was certainly glamorous, as proven by her invention, she was most certainly not stupid.

Behind the mask: Effects of Makeup Usage on Young Teenager

In literacy class, we had a project to write like a newspaper about any topics that is gender equity based. My topics was about the effectiveness of makeup on young teenager.

Imagine this, If you were the person who wore make up everyday, it doesn’t matter thick or thin, someone asks you why do you have to wear makeup everyday? How would you answer this? Some people said  that they wear it to feel confident but the real reason is they feel less confident without makeup.

Liking yourself and being  happy are good, makeup is just an add on. People who routinely wearing makeup everyday are often less confident. Makeup is like a mask that hides the real you.  Soon putting makeup on will become part of your daily life. The confident you have in yourself will soon diminished.

Dear young teenagers, I know you want to be beautiful; however, sometimes we have to accepted the fact that everyone is beautiful in the way they are. Learn to love yourself, if you don’t love yourself, who will? Please take a look in the mirror every morning and your will realize how beautiful your face is without it. According to an article they stated, “But really, we’re all beautiful to someone and makeup can just be the icing on an already okay cake.”

You might think that makeup is a way to look more attractive but actually you not. Some men don’t expect their girlfriends to wear makeup, nowadays what you look like makes people love you just the way you are, Not that mask that you are wearing everyday, girls.

Do you ever want to wear makeup as soon as possible just like a grown up women’s? Again, please take a look in the mirror and look at your face; tell yourself everyday how beautiful you are and realize how much your face shines by itself. You don’t need makeup to be happy and to start your day. You may be tired of wearing makeups early and spent most of your morning just to look beautiful. But, what you natural look now is what older generations are trying to get back later in their life.

Art analysis at Bophana

Last week my exploration called “Advertisements and communicate in Cambodia” went to Bophana. During our trip to Bophana, we went and look at some of the old advertisements that they had there. This is a piece of the art call Red Recall and it’s one of the pieces that I really interested in from the showcase. This Red Recall shows what happened during Khmer Rouge regime and how Angkar force them to marry. They used some piece of newspaper that talk about Khmer Rouge and put it on a white background. There is a piece of wheat that represent during that time they work and do farming. As you can see there is a woman and men, and the women have a heartbroken because they don’t want to marry but Angkar force them to. During Khmer rouge regime, they do this sort of things force marriages, separated family and etc. That is their uniform, black shirt, and black pants and add a little red scarf around their neck. What I really like about this piece is that they wrote Khmer letter in red which represents blood and killing. It’s hard to understand the letter underneath there but it’s give a really good context by just observing.

Training Liger Students to be a tour guilds

Last Sunday, nine Liger students did a training tour for the Journeys of Change, Cambodian Insights tour. I trained them to be professional and confident. During the school week they have classes but Journeys of Change want them to practice the tour route and the script. This allows them to practice the script and learn by doing instead of just sitting in a classroom. The Journeys of Change development team had the advantage of training with Soksabike. My team are now sharing that knowledge with our 23 Liger trainees. After the training tour, The liger students told us, “they were more motivated to become a tour guide.”

Be our next guest on a Journeys of Change bike tour, which starts on the Riverside at Phnom Penh and wanders through rural Cambodia.  The upcoming tour is Saturday, January 27, starting at 7:30am. Check our website for more details or register now.

Math (Probability)

1/15/2018

In the past few week, we were working on probability of simple events and this week we are working on probability of combined events. We have been focusing probability for a while now. Probability is a chance that something going to happens. It seems complicated for the probability of simple events because their lots of symbols that we have to learn and concepts. But for the probability of combined events, we are doing the math to figure out the probability that it will land on something for two or more events.

These are the set notation!

For the probability of combined events, we learn this two concept: Possibility Diagram and Tree Diagram. Which will show all possible events. Possibility Diagram is like a table but we can only use it for two combined events. Tree Diagram is like a branch that would connect from branches to branches and can use for more events than possibility diagram.

This is an example of possibility diagram!

This is an example of Tree Diagram!

Physics (Circular motion)

In Physic class now we are working on “Circular motion.” There is three concepts in circular motion: Angular displacement, Angular velocity and Angular acceleration.

Angular displacement – Is the angle of the object that move in a circle

= angular position

Angular velocity – the measure of change of angular position

Angular acceleration – is the change of the angular velocity

This is one of homework for practicing Circular motion.

Christmas break reading book “NEVER FALL DOWN”

Over the Christmas break, I had read a book called “NEVER FALL DOWN” by Patricia McCormick. I diced to read this book because it’s a big thing that had effect Cambodian and also I can gain more knowledge about Khmer Rouge. This book It’s about the life of Arn Chorn-Pond, How he survives Khmer Rouge and how he gets to go to America. Here is where he started in April 1975, everywhere in Battambang was full of music and happiness. Every day he lives with his aunt, brother, and sister. At that time school was limited only rich kids can go to school and poor kids they go to learn and stay at the pagoda. Arn not only stays and learn at the pagoda, he even gamble with the elders so that he can earn money to buy something for his family. Then one day the Khmer Rouge soldiers had arrived in his hometown and everyone have to leave everything they own and go to work in a field. Arn’s life has changed forever. During the Khmer Rouge regime, everyone got separated and they have to do what Anrka said if they don’t they will die. Many many Cambodians had died or killed because of starving, dengue fever, stealing food or even the Khmer Rouge think that you not good to keep.

He a change agent to me, he been through Khmer Rouge as a kid and then he had to leave his country to the United state because he got adapted by a kind man at Thailand Camp. At the United state had to learn English, go to church and speak about what happened to Cambodia to these American. His life has never been easy after Khmer Rouge. He even got bullied during school and about what he did. Now Arn lives in Cambodia and he helps to spread awareness of the Khmer traditional instrument and he also created an organization called “The Khmer Magic Music Bus”. There is more about what happened to Arn during and after the Khmer Rouge. I suggest you read this book it’s very inspiring even he went through bad things in life he still has the courage to helps others that he know or meet.

Khmer Poem

This is a poem that I wrote in my Khmer literature about my grandma. Even though, she had pass away I wish I would spent more with her and make good memories together. I miss the conversation that I had with her and would lead to my bright further. Her lonely shadow is here and I called her name. So sad that she couldn’t hear my words. I want angels or god to help me, so that she could hear my world form where I am to where she is.

Journeys of Change (Bike Tour Experience)

In the first week of my exploration, my team and I went to Battambong to collaborate and learn form Soksabike which is our mentor. We have a workshop with them and we been on two of their tour: Local Livelihood Bike Tour and Walk and Bike Tour. Their tour was amazing and also we get to try a lots of stuff that the villager made as a livelihood business. Without Soksabike helps this exploration would spend a lot of time researching for information. They basically share every information that they know to us and also allows the guides to share their experience. Furthermore they even teach us how to fix bike when their is a flat tire.

When we arrive at our school we divided our team into three: Tour, Marketing and Business. I am in the Marketing team with two other students. In Marketing we want to promote our business to our clients and also to attract customer; we had created a Facebook Page, Website Page, Brochure and registration form.

The Students who are in this exploration will be a tour guide without doing any tests. All of the donation from this business will go to the guide further education and business. Even this exploration end we also hire a Marketing manager and Business manager in order to run this business.
