Change Cambodia 2016-2017

Through this years 2016-2017, I have learned and explored lots of things that allowed me to create change. Based on my experiences, there are three classes that really stand out in my mind: Game Design, Technovation, and Preventative health. These classes have shown me what the real world looks like and also to develop an idea into a real thing.

I joined Technovation girls for 12 weeks to learn how to code and write a business plan. In this 12 week, we need to invent an app that connected to one of this 6 topic: Health, Education, Peace, Environment, Gender equality, and Poverty. The mentors had expected us after we join this event we should know how to code in Inventor, write a business plan, know how to present in public and wanted girls to involved in this program. After these 12 week learning and making, we had an event where we present to a judge. If you win you will present again but with a bigger audience and also where you will win the best app in Cambodia. Moreover even you lose in the first round you still have a chance to win to go to the USA. As we know that girls don’t really get a chance to learn this type of thing so that’s why I take a risk to join this event. By doing so, I learn new thing from this event and change people’s perspective that girl can do anything that boy can do. As the new generation, this event had a lot of impact on me that makes me want to learn more about coding and join this event again.

Besides, in Game Design exploration we are trying to implement a boring game in the government school. Our goal in this exploration was to make an educational game also to build a solution to solve climate change. This game allows students have fun while learning new things as well as reviewing their lesson. Moreover, understand about climate change solution that we provided and can develop their own way to face with climate change. This game will Introduce them to a new way of learning from this educational game. Once we finish everything we will distribute our game to the government school in Cambodia. As a result, this game will help them to improve their learning and get a sense of a climate change that was happening in the world so that they can prepare them self.

Moreover, Preventative health is an exploration where we are teaching people in Koh Rong island to be healthy. We went to the school on that island and we present a little act to teach them about diabetes because it is very hard for them to go to the city and it would cost them a lot of money. We also learn from Song Saa Island about the ecosystem in the water like the coral reef, type of fish and jellyfish etc… It is my first time to see and learn about the ecosystem in the water and it makes me want to protect it more.

In Conclusion, Everyone can be a change agent but you need to believe in yourself and do something that people needs. By starting from little to little it also considers as change agent. Every year we need to try something new and continue to reach our goal. Based on my expertise this year really change my years because I really think that this year’s have a lot of thing going on and I have learned a lot of things.

Game design team collaborate with Chhbar Ompov school

The game design team went to Chhbar Improv high school on 16.1.2017 to test out our game with the 7th-grade student. It was a fun experience to teach them about our game. When we explain them they said they don’t understand but we said that’s okay if you try you will know. When they started playing the game they were laughing and enjoying and understand how to play. But one of the problems is that they need us to lead them to start like to give some idea to do.

We went to the same school on 24.1.2016. Our group had followed up with the director. So this time we have 4 old students who played last week and 8 new students. For the new student, they understand faster than the last student and when their turn they know right away what they going to do. For the old student, they can play faster and get to solve more solution. Our problem was collaborating we not really talk together but we argue together so it makes the game so slower. But it was a lot of good exasperate for us to test our game with them.

Preventative Heath

My highlights on Koh Rong island were to scooper dive, snorkel at Song Saa private reef and snorkel to see the seagrass and seeing a small jellyfish. That Private reef was amazing it is like a giant world and there are many biodiversities. I saw Butterflyfish, Sea urchin and giant coral reef. My Favorite part of the seagrass was to see the Chocolate chip starfish and Seahouse because I know some information and it seems to interest me about what it look like in real life and now I see one it make me very very happy. Our group was walking at the mangrove place and at there we saw a group of small jellyfish then we call each other to see. This trip is very cool to learn something that not really connected to our exploration but it’s a cool opportunity for me to learn about the under biodiversity.

Before Chicago

The city you know is only about 150 years old. Long ago, before it was a city, people lived in this area. They were Native Americans who lived in Chicago long before it had this name.
They were the ones who actually gave it its name. They called the city Checagou, which means wild onions. Every year, it was difficult to live here in the wintertime because it was snowy and extremely cold. There were not even any plants to pick. Then, the first plant that grew was the wild onion. In early spring, the Native Americans would eat it. Therefore, this became the place of the wild onion. No one actually planted it; the onion grew naturally.
There were grasslands and forests, and there were also many animals. The Native Americans survived by hunting and fishing and from food they grew. In the summer, they grew food by planting vegetables. While it was still summer, they began to prepare for the winter. They knew it would be freezing and snowy. They would be able to track rabbits in the winter, and there would also be deer. However, they would not have as much food because there would be no plants growing in winter.
In summer, the families would relocate to a village near a lake or river and build homes there. They would build the homes together. The homes were very large, so that a family could have several people living in one home. The families would fish and grow food. People in the village helped each other out. There always was work to do, and the family members shared the jobs.
Then in winter, they would leave the village and build homes in the woods. Each family would build its own home, and would take animal skins with them to help construct their homes. They would use branches to make a kind of tent, and then cover the walls with those skins to keep them warm. They were particularly skilled at building those types of homes.
They would continue to hunt for food, and sometimes they would move their home in winter to a place where they could find more animals to hunt. It was difficult to get the food they needed. The weather was harsh, and animals sometimes died of starvation. Native Americans had to deal with the weather, getting food, and keeping warm. So, when they found the wild onions they knew it soon would be better weather and they would have more food. They would be able to join their friends and family at the summer village.
Today in Chicago, Native Americans face different challenges. They have jobs to earn money to live. They work every day in many occupations. No longer is it a place for hunting and building your own home. It is hard to imagine what it looked like here long ago.

Word Maze 2 – Angela Bracelet

Angela stopped looking at her bracelet to admire the ocean. Her grandmother had given it to (improve, opinion, her), and it was very special. Then (Angela, religion, scare) slipped off her shoes to enjoy(strongly, huge, a) barefoot walk along the beach.

A (woman, communicate, reason) in a boat passed by. She (waved, easy, wildly), and Angela waved back. Then she (comfort, stared, introduce) down at her arm in shock. (Crying, Punishment, Granny’s)bracelet was gone!

Angela returned to (her, plan, butter) family and told them about her (bracelet, relaxed, throw) disaster. They burst into action. Grandpa (used, lie, salt) his metal detector. He couldn’t find (ran, neck, the) bracelet.

Angela’s brother Johnny followed his (inside, fought, sister’s) footprints along the beach. He too(determined, dirty, hoped) to discover her bracelet, but he (never, light, reflect) saw it.

Mom carefully sifted the (girl, sand, wooden) where Angela had been sitting. She (searched, street, leg)and searched. She couldn’t find the (happy, bracelet, small), either.

It was time to go (home, skin, agree). Angela blinked back tears. She picked (up, told, dress) her shoe. Out fell the bracelet!

I got one wrong in this word maze.
