Liger perspective in sport

In research stated “ Only 25% of women in Cambodia who are in the top athletes and 10% are coaches“ according to peace-sport. So at the start of this school year, there is an exploration call Frisbee League in Cambodia that is a year-long project. In fact, I’m a part of this exploration and I want to change my province, my country and the world perspective on women in sport. I believe that this is only the beginning of getting more girls playing sport.

When we were young we always have activities or sports together. Two years ago, I realize that in sports like football and basketball, the practice was divided between girls and boys. Yet frisbee is the first and only sport that involved both girls and boys. What difference can I make by joining this project? Are there any girls in the rural area that love sports but don’t have the chance?

Afterward, I decided to interview the basketball coach on why does he have different practice for the girl and boy. “The reason is that basketball is a physical game, that sometimes they have to touch and bounce off one another” once said Jeff Boucher. But for the junior, it’s okay for them to play together since they are only the beginner and younger. Just like football year 1 practice, we didn’t divide the girl or boy team. As we get older and stronger, we started to divide girl and boy so that the girl would have more opportunities to play as well. Moreover, the boys are much stronger in term of strength, for safety reasons that’s why there is girls and boys team.

On the other hand, I also interview the frisbee coach he said: “Being a coach is a privilege because it allows me to introduce a mentality of this sport, play hard play well and with high spirit.” Ultimate frisbee for him means self referee that allows you to recognize your own false and except it. In liger, every Wednesday ASE we play frisbee and he loves to see the junior competition with the senior because by doing it this way, Junior can learn, play smarter to win senior. For senior allow them to learn to play smart and not underestimate the Junior. His last thought is Ultimate Frisbee is a fun and unique sport that is no barrier for all age, gender or size.

Let start! Frisbee or flying disc is a non-contact game, played on a field or indoor pitch. It does not have a referee which allow players to have conflict resolution and Integrities.

At the end of the game, we always have our spirit circle which we talk about the game, skills needed to improve, pointing out to players that tried their best that week and also keeping the girls empower.

After the spirit circle, we would do affirmation “ពេលដែលខ្ញុំនិយាយថា កម្លាំង អ្នកនិយាយថា នារី  កម្លាំង! នារី!  កម្លាំង! នារី!  កម្លាំង កម្លាំង កម្លាំង! នារី នារី នារី” ៉៉Let’s all do this affirmation again “When I say Komlang to say Neary” Komkang! Neary! Komlang! Neary! Komlang Komlang Komlang! Neary Neary Neary! This translate to Girl power, we do this to support girls in sport and empowering them giving them opportunities in sport. As more girls from Kampong Speu joining frisbee will help us as show the government that we can implement this new sport into the curriculum. In order to reach the goals of 50 50% of boys and girls in 2025, which will help to reduce gender barriers in sport.

Society play

We went to Takeo and Kampot to do a play performance that we did last time to Liger students. In Liger Traveling Theater exploration, we had written 4 stories that were based on a relationship with family, peers, partner, and society. The relationship with society story is about a girl who kind of fat and got this new job but a worker there discriminate her. Then there are this two separate – one who’s eat less and try to be beautiful and the other one eat a lot- that wants to control her life. In the end, she chose her selves because she wants freedom and do whatever she wants and also doesn’t have to care what others said about her. The show started with magic trick, Performance, original songs, Drug prevention film and then end with the magic trick again. Since our audience shows a lot of interest in the magic trick that’s why we start the show and end the show with a magic trick.

Then part of our junior exploration is Set Design, they help us to find schools, background music, staging, and props. The first school that we perform to was the student in grade 4 and 5 in Takeo which was really young and it’s not the best fit for our audience. It’s was so loud and messy that the student didn’t understand.

After that, we went to another school which was way better because it’s high school and they’re much better than the first one. This time we even have a speaker attach with the microphone and about 150 students come to was the performance.

Frisbee League — Girls Power

  • Chabok High School entrance

On the 6th December, we had visited the girl down at Kampong Speu after we got approval from the government. This time our plan was to go there to just throw frisbee disc around and introduce them to what is frisbee and who are we. The first school we visited was Chabok high school both grade 10 and 11 and we only 5 mins since they are having an exam. When I look back to this school, I still think this is crazy that my whole group did this. What we did was, presents to the whole classroom about our project alone with boys sitting there which wasn’t our target. But anyway we are trying to promote girls into playing Frisbee and as my observation girls didn’t have any courage to raise their hand up to join and play this Frisbee. Also, it might because they didn’t get to play with Frisbee-like other schools that we visited. Sadly the class I presented to, there was no one wanted to play Frisbee. Like another presenter, they didn’t get it to and some got about 10 to 15 students. But at some times we got around 70 girls for the whole school which is good for the training and eliminating for the league. Soukhaphaly high school, the girls there were really interacting with us and they showed a lot of excitement.

We even tell every school that next week we will come back and do a pitch to them. Also, try to get their name by then so that we can prepare on how many people are going to show up for the training. Over this Christmas break, Some Kampong Speu students and I will be going to every school on Sunday to get them familiar with Frisbee. Then in January, they will start the real training.

On Monday the 12th of November 2018, we did a Critical teen issues workshop on the topic of healthy relationship. We know that these topic were not typically been talk about so we want to raise an awareness and ideas to have a healthier relationships. Healthy relation does not only apply to boyfriend/girlfriend but it apply to friendship, boyfriend/girlfriend, family and society. The presentation went very well as it was plan out but I can improve by taking more control on the student. Down there’s like a outline of the presentation both English and Khmer.

Critical Teen Issue

In the Critical teen issue we have multiple topics, for round 1 we focused on the healthy relationship. We have been creating questions related to the relationship between Partners, Peers, Family, Social. We translated all the questions, turn it into google form and sent it to all Liger student. While we are doing that, We also create a plan for the workshop. Based on the answers we got, we will focus more deeply into the relationship that isn’t healthy. We will also implement this workshop into garment schools but not running it yourself. 75% of the workshop mostly are activities this way they will get the point more easily and then we will show them the consent video that we create. In this project I just learn that “No.” Is a complete sentence.

Frisbee League – Trip to Kamong Spue

One of my long-term explorations is called Frisbee League in Cambodia. In this exploration, we are creating the first Cambodian Women Frisbee League to empower women in sport for rural kampong speu girls and then if this project work we would open up to all girls in Cambodia. As one of kampong speu girls, I am so excited and proud to be in this group and I can’t imagine when I’m teaching them to play frisbee. Moreover, We have a lot of things that needed to be done before our Pchum Ben break, so after the break, we will go and appraise the government about our project. This project really needs the government helps because in order this to be done we need their permission to work with those high school girls. Since I know a lot about Kampong Speu, I did some research and ask my relatives, do they know any high school around Chan Thnal high school. Chan Thnal high school is one the main school that we wanted to collaborate with. Then I lead a team to Kampong speu and visits the five school that are on my list. I need to track down the distance and time it took to arrive at each school. We even go and talk to the principles of our project and they really excited to work with us but they need the permission from the government. Nevertheless, our exploration already prepares all of those so that when the students come back from their big break we are able to talk to them and before that, we convince the government to help with our project.

Liger Traveling Theater

On the 21st of August, we went to the Cambodian National Museum to see the Stage Reading by Cambodian Living Arts and Khmer writers. For one of my exploration project call Liger Traveling Theater. In the stage reading there are Fortune Teller, Alone, and Chapei. It was the best experience because I get to see more of Cambodian who get involved in this writing skills.

Fortune Teller was written by Lim Phanna and it’s about Davy ‒wife‒ feel like the husband is trying to hide something from her, so she decided to ask help from the fortune teller.

Alone was written by Chhon Sina and it’s about a family, who sopeap is a pregnant woman and about to give birth to a child. And also her struggle with her husband seeing someone else.

Chapei was written by Suon Sothera and it’s about How Theara keeps his promise to his grandfather for maintaining Chapei ‒Khmer traditional instrument ‒ for nowadays society? This is my favorite stage reading so far because I got to listen to songs playing by Chapei. Even Though there are not a lot of people who wanted to preserve the culture but for me, he is doing the best thing that no one can ever do.

ILO exploration

I was in the ILO exploration for round five, which is the last exploration of the year. The ILO stands for International Labour Organization. They are a United Nations agency created as an organization to help all three parties the government, employers, and employees with the goals to improve labor conditions and promote decent work for all women and men. Our school was asked to help pilot a project by implementing soft skills training with colleges students in Cambodia and also if it possible for the garment to put it on their website for students to assess it. We are not teachers for this project since the module was made to be a self-taught program; we were only there to facilitate and guild them.

Our exploration started to revise the module and then let the ILO checked, after that, we then implement it to Universities and high schools. The ILO was impressed with the amount of work that was done by us. Moreover, we even translate the whole module into Khmer for the high school students. We had worked with Cambodian International Academy (CIA), Toutes L’école Happy Chandara, Kampong Thom High school, Royal University of Law and Economics, Little heart and Paññāsāstra University of Cambodia to implement our training there.

In class time we would work on putting all the survey in, putting the name in the certificate, making a video to advertise about Soft skills, Preparing for the next training, budget and last but not least make a report for the ILO. Even Though, sometimes we would give up on one of the Saturday just to do this training with those schools.

Most of the result were positive since we used the right module and it really helps them to think more about their visions. They really enjoy making their visions board because it more like an activity base and the rest of the module was like discussing and answering.

Advertise for Journeys of Change

As you may know I was employed to be one of the Marketing manager for Journeys of Change. On Sunday the 25th of March, I and three other Liger students went out to phnom penh to advertise for Journeys of Change. This was our first time going out without an adult for learning experience. Therefore we decided to cover only these three location first: Riverside, Aeon Mall and Boeung Keng Kang. Just for our safety, time and also it’s close to our starting point. Than we choose coffee shop, restaurant, Hotel and other places that are in these location.

One of our mistake was we didn’t email to the places that we wanted to go and talk about our project first. Obviously, we just go in to their place and than we started to talk about our project. By saying “Hello, my name is Kagna and I am from the Liger leadership Academy. In our school we had this start up called Journeys of Change and we would like to ask your permission if we can put our brochure and business card here to reach out for more clients.” Again Some Places that we went they said they need to talk to their manager first, so then we just leave our business card and brochure their for them. In addition some places their manager was there and they are very kind they provide us some information how to advertise, the technic  and also allowing us to put our brochure at their place. We also learn that we need to have the stander to put the brochure in and need to clip the brochure to the business card.

At first I was scared to talk to people there and didn’t know what to say. But than I look at my friend how they convince them to allow us to put the brochure there and I try its work. Again I started to take the risk and go to talk to people and if I miss something my friend can correct me. Anyway now I learn that sometimes you need to get out of your comfort zone to try new thing that you have never done before to gain more experience. However I think this is a successful trip for me because people are welcome and kind not like what I expected.

Interviewing Villager Around Camkids School

On Sunday, March 4, I volunteer to help an exploration to do interviews with villagers down in Kampong Speu. I volunteer to help them because my hometown is close to there and I can help to create change around my village when I have the chance. The exploration is about surveying and statistic. We did interviews with people there because we are working with Camkids. Camkids is a school at Kampong Speu that willing to help villagers around there place and wants to know what they can do more in the future for them. Before that day they go through the questions with us and make sure that we all understand the surveys and can do it on our own. The surveys were 30 minutes or more and the questions was mostly about financial in the family, Education and some information about Camkids. I did 7 interviews and everyone there was so nice and friendly to me which had made me more confidence to ask the question about them. It’s not that easy to just walk in strangers house then ask them about there personalize. It is my first time to walk in a stranger house and started to talk to them. It was hard and that first interview was my longest one ever.
